The IMAT test date is out!

The Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) released the official entrance exam date only days ago. Sitting the IMAT (International Medical Admission Test) is a necessary step you need to take in order to get admitted to any of the public English-taught medical programs in Italy.

When is the IMAT 2021 going to be held?

The confirmed IMAT 2021 date is September 9, 2021 (09.09.2021)

What is the IMAT test?

IMAT is a 100-minute long test held in English, created by Cambridge Assessment. It consists of 60 multiple-choice questions with 5 options each. Every year slight changes to the format could be expected, so we look forward to the release of the official test specifications decree, usually released around June. And still, major changes are unlikely to occur, so last year’s translated decree is a must-read if you’re planning to take the IMAT in 2021.

Where can I take the IMAT in 2021?

The exam is taken in presence (not online). There are numerous test centers all around the world. Here are last year’s test locations. The world pandemic didn’t stop the IMAT 2020 from happening, so we have no reason to worry about the 2021 exam either.

Sitting the IMAT admission test grants you access to apply for both medical and dentistry public courses in English in Italy.

Moreover, If you speak Italian, you can also take another test – in a similar format but held in Italian language, and apply for studying medicine in Italy in Italian. You can take both the IMAT and the Italian version of it (mind that they slightly differ as the Italian test is not created by Cambridge Assessment) simultaneously, and thus increase your chances significantly. The Italian entrance test will be held on September 1, 2021.

How to register for IMAT exam?

Before sitting the IMAT on September 9, 2021, you’ll need to register. The application is done exclusively online through Universitaly.it (see our instruction video). During the application, besides registering for the exam, you select your preferred university choices. You can pick to apply to as many programs as you wish at once, from a single course to all 13 different Universities.

When to register for IMAT admissions test?

Official dates for the registration are not yet released but based on previous years, it will almost certainly begin in July. The registration is normally open for a 3-week time window only (the first 3 weeks of July), so it’s imperative that you don’t miss this time slot if you wish to sit the IMAT in 2021.

IMPORTANT NOTES TO KEEP IN MIND:

** for Non-EU applicants only: keep in mind that Non-EU candidates are also required to do a pre-enrollment procedure between April and July (previous year’s estimate). Read more about the pre-enrollment process in our step-by-step application guide (Step 1)

** If you are planning to apply to Turin University: it has its own additional application procedure, which needs to be done apart from the regular exam registration through Universitaly.it. Times for application are January – April for all applicants (EU and Non-EU) and May – June for EU applicants only.

More details and everything else you’ll need to know for the application process you can find in our step-by-step application guide, as well as in the application section.

How to prepare for the IMAT?

Planning on a good preparation strategy is vital to your success, as the IMAT exam is the only determinant for candidate selection.

One way to prepare is with the IMAT online live course, tailored to the specific test subjects’ requirements. Another way is self-studying with IMAT preparation books. In any case, make sure you make good use of the IMAT topic list and the IMAT past papers, as well as the online IMAT test simulation which you can use for free to get a better feel of the test.

Don’t forget to also subscribe to our newsletter so that we can send you all the updates about IMAT 2021, including when enrollment and pre-enrollment will open, a test centers list, and more!
